DIFFICULT PEOPLE: LIBRARY WATER {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this dark comedy series about two self-centered best friends/would-be comedians living in New York City. In this episode, Julie Kessler and Billy Epstein meet up for a matinee of "Annie," where they discuss the strangely wonderful properties of public library water-fountain water and outrage a nearby yuppie mom with their bawdy comments. At home, Julie begs to skip boyfriend Arthur's boss' Oscar party, then finding that her off-color Twitter joke about celebrity toddler Blue Ivy Carter has not gone over well. At work, Billy spars with fellow waiter/nemesis Matthew and restaurant owner Denise, and Julie meets with her chatty mother Marilyn, who reveals that she has mastered the art of hypnotism. Julie and Billy then meet with a businessman, Kevin, about their brilliant idea to bottle "library water" for sale, though he points out that his company already sells boxed water, not bottled, finally admitting that he cannot help them.
Julie and Billy are annoyed to hear that yet another fellow comedian has landed a promising contract, and Matthew nastily reveals that Josh, Billy's ex, has already found someone new. Desperate to forget about him, Billy meets with Marilyn for a hypnotism session, and he joins Julie and Arthur at the "terrible" Oscar party, where they are annoyed to run into the disapproving "Annie" mom, Kathy – who is in fact married to Kevin. Kathy declares them both "disgusting people" when Julie tries to defend her Blue Ivy joke, and several of Billy's mischievous gay friends join the party – as does Josh. Billy, Julie and Arthur give up and abandon the party, only to find themselves stranded far away from the subway, and Julie discovers that she has accidentally switched cell phones with Kathy, who has taken it upon herself to update her Twitter feed with another "joke."
