DIFFICULT PEOPLE: THE CHILDREN'S MENU (TV)
Summary
One in this dark comedy series about two self-centered best friends/would-be comedians living in New York City. In this episode, Julie is annoyed to find that teen Cissy Donato, whom she used to babysit, is now a YouTube "celebrity," and Denise leaves town for a week, unwisely leaving Billy in charge of the café. He and Julie immediately decide to change the restaurant into "The Children's Menu," serving simplistic kid-themed food for adults, while elsewhere Matthew secures an agent and lands an audition for "Saturday Night Live," confident that he will be accepted as their first openly gay male cast member. Julie resentfully attends Marilyn's country-club speech about stress, and when Cissy's mother Carol boasts about her daughter's success, Julie ponders a YouTube career of her own.
Billy begs Matthew to get him a spot in the "SNL" showcase, and Julie is disappointed when her first idea, "Drunk Science," is not exactly a viral hit. The Children's Menu, however, is a huge success – but the plan backfires when "actual children" begin to arrive in droves, unaware of the intended irony. Julie is overwhelmed by the young customers, and after the showcase, Billy is immediately informed that he will not be hired by "SNL." Marilyn arrives at the café with Carol and Cissy, and Billy and Julie angrily tell her that she is merely a teen "having a moment," and Denise returns ahead of schedule and finds a chaotic scene, as a familiar-looking police sketch on the TV news drives all of the kids and parents out of the café. Later, Cissy embarrasses Billy and Julie on her channel, and the duo decides that they must refocus their comedic efforts. Turning on "SNL," Billy realizes the unpleasant truth of why he was not hired onto the show.
