DIFFICULT PEOPLE: DEVIL'S THREE-WAY (TV)
Summary
One in this dark comedy series about two self-centered best friends/would-be comedians living in New York City. In this episode, Billy and Julie's joint "storytelling" style of stand-up comedy proves unsuccessful, and Marilyn, distraught at being excluded from a psych convention, resolves to make herself "seem younger." Billy auditions for a remake of the 1988 father/son body-swap comedy "Vice Versa" but is told that he is not believable in the part, as his own father is dead, so he resolves to do some "research" into the matter before his callback. Elsewhere, Julie tracks down Brian Walsh, a high-school classmate who was oblivious to her desperate crush on him, and Arthur agrees to help her feign a fabulous and successful life when he comes over for a non-date evening. Nate resolves to teach Billy some classic father-son skills, like how to rewire a lamp and drive a car, and Marilyn takes an impulsive trip to the plastic surgeon.
Brian misunderstands Arthur and Julie's amorous behavior and assumes that they are angling for a "devil's three-way" – the less-traditional two men and one woman – and Julie convinces a skeptical Arthur to go along with the idea. Billy and Nate's driving lesson goes horribly awry when Billy hits Talking Heads frontman David Byrne on his bicycle, and he is dragged out of his callback by a cop and an irate Good Samaritan. Julie, Arthur and Brian's evening together ends up as more of a voyeuristic twosome, and a frantic Marilyn calls Julie after a possibly botched eye job, with Julie pointing out that women "can't win" when it comes to appearance. Billy then calls Julie to bail him out of jail, where they agree that they are too reliant on "approval from strangers," and Julie returns home to find that Brian has robbed them – making for a far more interesting story to tell onstage. Later, the friends are unexpectedly featured on the candid camera show "What Are You Going to Do?" when they casually ignore a staged incident of blatant discrimination.
