DIFFICULT PEOPLE: BLADE STALLION (TV)
Summary
One in this dark comedy series about two self-centered best friends/would-be comedians living in New York City. In this episode, Billy and Julie complain that all of New York's public spaces are turning into "ironic day-care centers," and Arthur is rattled when he catches Julie enjoying some private time with an adult film. Billy's domineering sister-in-law Rucchel rants about Garry's failure to secure a venue for her poetry class "graduation" ceremony, and Billy offers the café as an alternative and urges Garry to tell her to "back off" on occasion. Julie visits PBS and is excited to spot a fancy vacant office, though she admits to Billy that she is "concerned" about Arthur's reaction to her rather extreme pornography preferences, at which point Nate casually reveals his past career as adult performer known as "Blade Stallion." Marilyn enlists Julie to mentor teenager Inez, a patient's daughter who has dreams of a showbiz career, and when Garry follows Billy's advice, Rucchel immediately kicks him out, prompting Garry to move in with his exasperated brother.
Billy and Julie take over the vacant PBS office and immediately begin berating their new "intern," Inez, and Julie finally talks to Arthur about her "secret movies," which generally involve a large number of participants. Arthur, in turn, reveals that his preferred smut exclusively features women who closely resemble Julie, much to her frustration. Billy and Julie then scheme to find a "stubborner, tinier, Jewisher" woman even than Rucchel – obviously Marilyn – to send Garry running back to his wife, and when Billy sleeps over in "his" office to escape Garry, he is surprised by the return of the office's real owner, renowned documentarian Ken Burns. Julie and Arthur agree to keep their adult fare "kosher" – that is, separate – and Garry decides to reunite with his wife when Billy assures him that nothing could ever render him "cool" in his brother's eyes. At the poetry graduation, Marilyn ends up agreeing with Rucchel about Garry's failings as a husband, but Rucchel concludes that she's "not gonna do any better" and accepts him back. Billy and Julie learned that Inez has scored a book deal with a novel about a "job from hell," and Rucchel and Garry are elated to meet an important figure in their marriage: Blade Stallion.
