PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL TV PREVIEWS 2019: HULU: DOLLFACE {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2019 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles. This evening celebrates "Dollface," the comedy/fantasy series about a young woman's attempt to rebuild her female friendships after being abruptly dumped by her boyfriend.
Host Rene Reyes (vice-president of programming, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces the pilot episode, which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 137777.)
After the screening, Jessica Radloff (West Coast Entertainment Correspondent, Glamour) moderates the following panelists: executive producer/creator/writer Jordan Weiss; executive producers Ira Ungerleider and Brett Hedblom; executive producer/cast member Kat Dennings (Jules); and cast members Brenda Song (Madison Maxwell), Esther Povitsky ("Other Alison B." / Izzy), and Shay Mitchell (Stella Cole).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the meaning behind the show's many "Entourage" references; inspiration from Weiss' real life and her amazement that her early writing sample was eventually crafted into its own series; the show's title, stemming from a nickname bestowed by Dennings' ex; Dennings' identification with the character of Jules; Song's admiration for Stella's fearlessness; the "instant love connection" between the actors and why the show doesn't need to be categorized as focusing on "female friendships"; the characters' many personal issues; an upcoming episode focused on "monogamy-shaming"; Ungerleider's 19-year-old daughter as his "test subject" for the show's accuracy and relatability; the importance of fantasy sequences representing Jules' new reality, including Beth Grant's cameo as the "Cat Lady"; Weiss' interest in focusing on "friendship love stories," which are usually secondary to romance plots in comedy shows; the advantages of Dennings' dual role as star and executive producer; Povitsky's memories of receiving the "Dollface" script on the same day that her other series, "Alone Together," was officially cancelled; the characters' dating lives, including possible reappearances by Jules now-ex Jeremy (Connor Hines); how Weiss' love of the Haim song "Want You Back," which is actually about a platonic friendship, led to band member Este Haim's cameo in the pilot; "Full House" star Dave Coulier's appearance in the Margaritaville restaurant scene; hints about other guest stars, including appearances by Malin Åkerman as Jules' boss at woöm, and "This Is Us" Emmy nominee Michael Angarano; hopes for an appearance by Dennings' "2 Broke Girls" co-star Beth Behrs; cameos from the producers, including an unintentional "walk-on" from Weiss; Ungerleider's longtime experience on "Friends" and why a strong cast is the "secret sauce" for creating iconic TV friendships; and their favorite television besties, including Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) and The Fonz (Henry Winkler) from "Happy Days" and Fred Rogers' affection for his young viewers.
