DOLLFACE: GUY'S GIRL {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this comedy/fantasy series about a young woman's attempt to rebuild her female friendships after being abruptly dumped by her boyfriend. In this episode, Jules is shocked when Jeremy, her boyfriend of five years, suddenly upends her life by terminating their relationship. She then finds herself on a bus full of heartbroken women, and the "cat lady" driver reminds them that their friendships with other women are "sacred and necessary" and shouldn't be neglected in order to appease men. Arriving at the terminal, Jules is left alone and discovers that all of her friendships have formally "expired," so she hurries off to reconnect with her college roommate, glamorous Madison Maxwell. Madison is skeptical about her sudden return, noting that Jules spent years "preoccupied" with only Jeremy, and Jules admits she is out of practice, finding herself imitated by the whole "squad thing." She seeks advice from Madison's current closest friend and roommate, avant-garde model/artist Stella Cole, who tells her to "take a bomb to her comfort zone" and embrace chaos to restart her new single life.
Jules heads to work at ultra-modern women's magazine "woöm" and tries to ingratiate herself with three overachieving co-workers – Alison S., Alison B. and Other Alison B. – and is surprised when they immediately express supportive sympathy for her breakup. Encouraged, she asks to join them at an upcoming launch party for an odd new product, and she is further relieved when Madison and Stella accept her invitation and join her at the soirée. Madison and Stella instantly bond with the Alisons – one of whom eventually confesses that she is really Izzy – but Jules again fails at the bonds of womanhood when Stella leaves with a random man. When she runs into Jeremy, however, she finally concludes that she has been a "garbage person" and rejects him in favor of heading off with Madison. As they hunt for Stella, Madison admits that she felt unable to confide in her former pal during a recent family crisis, and they finally find their friend at a Jimmy Buffet-themed restaurant and, with typical female solidarity, rescue her from a creepy older man. Jules then heads home alone, pondering her new lady-focused life.
