PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL TV PREVIEWS 2019: CBS: ALL RISE {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2019 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles. This evening celebrates "All Rise," the drama series about the lives and work of the hardworking staff of a Los Angeles County courthouse.
Host Rene Reyes (vice-president of programming, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces the pilot episode, which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 137807.) After the screening, Kevin Frazier (co-host, "Entertainment Tonight") moderates the following panelists: executive producer/creator/writer Greg Spottiswood; executive producer/director Michael M. Robin; executive producer Sunil Nayar; and cast members Simone Missick (Lola Carmichael), Wilson Bethel (Mark Callan), Marg Helgenberger (Lisa Benner), J. Alex Brinson (Luke Watkins), Jessica Camacho (Emily Lopez), Lindsay Mendez (Sara Castillo), and Ruthie Ann Miles (Sherri Kansky).
The panelists touch on such topics as: depicting the American justice system through a "new, hopeful lens"; Robin's past experience on "NYPD Blue," and why strong casting and writing are always crucial; Missick's optimism about the "new wave of television" depicting more diverse and realistically complex lead characters; her inspiration from strong-willed judges in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan; Helgenberger's experience playing a judge for the first time in her long career; potential "fun and romance" between Mark and Lola and between Emily and Luke; Mendez and Miles' impressive Broadway careers and the challenges of transitioning from stage to screen, including the ever-changing scripts; Miles' thoughts on how fanatically organized judicial assistant Sherri "rules the courtroom"; their partial use of "ripped-from-the-headlines" stories, including tales from consulting producer and former L.A. district attorney Gil Garcetti; Missick's hopes that the show will inspire positive real-world change, including how judges' split-second decisions can alter a person's entire life for better or for worse; Bethel's sense of the show's honest and compelling portrayal of real issues through sympathetic characters, rather than mere hot-button "catchphrases"; the cast's "off-the-charts" camaraderie; Robin's strengths as a director in creating a collaborative, peaceful set, even during the tumult of shooting the pilot episode; how Helgenberger's experience on "Rise" compares to her many years on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation"; plans to thoroughly explore the characters' lives in addition to embracing a procedural format; the wide variety of upcoming guest stars and the crew's respect for the many supporting players; and how former actor Spottiswood encourages the actors to "collide" and experiment with new ideas and dynamics.
