ESPN SPORTSCENTER: YAHTZEE {KEN GRIFFEY, JR.}
{ADWEEK: BEST SPOTS OF SEPTEMBER 1997}

Summary

In this commercial for ESPN, SportsCenter anchorman Dan Patrick explains that announcers on the network are famous for making up catch phrases right on the spot to describe the action during sporting events. Meanwhile, an announcer in a playback booth repeatedly watches a clip of baseball star Ken Griffey, Jr. hitting a home run. "It's never iffy if it's Griffey," he says, sensing immediately that he's on the wrong track. "That blows." In the end he decides that the word "yahtzee" might have some descriptive potential.
