Summary
This program presents a portion of coverage of the 1980 XIII Olympic Winter Games from Lake Placid. Highlights of this portion include coverage of the following events and topics: Anchor sports commentator Jim McKay presides throughout this portion and introduces various events and highlights. McKay introduces figure skater Dorothy Hamill (USA) for her intermission routine prior to the Closing Ceremony. Sports writer Pierre Salinger provides a preview for the next Olympics in 1984 at Sarajevo, Yugoslavia; bobsled and luge will be held at Mt. Trebevic; however, many mountains still need to be developed for the winter events along with the mountainous roads; currently the Olympic village is underway along with the press center; visitors will be coming to a communist country, however, it is much more laid back compared to other communist countries. McKay introduces ABC's closing ceremony tradition with a recap of the memorable moments at the winter Olympics, with music by Beethoven "Ode to Joy." McKay covers the closing ceremony which includes the athletes walking into the Olympic ice rink; the adjoining of the flags; Lord Killanin, president of the International Olympic Committee, providing his closing remarks; the official Olympic hymn is played while the Olympic flag is drawn down and the Olympic flame is extinguished.
