GAMES OF THE XXI OLYMPIAD, THE {1976 MONTREAL OLYMPICS} {1976/07/21}, PART 3 (TV)

Summary

This program presents a portion of coverage of the 1976 Summer Games of the XXI Olympiad from Montreal. Highlights of this portion include coverage of the following events and topics:

Anchor sports commentator Jim McKay presides throughout this portion.

McKay comments on the newly-constructed Olympic Velodrome cycling track. Trevor Gadd (Great Britain) and Leigh Barczewski (USA) compete in the men's individual sprint, and Barczewski is disqualified for an illegal move that causes Gadd to fall, making Gadd the winner by default.

McKay discusses gymnast Nadia Comaneci (Romania) and the "brouhaha" over her unprecedented perfect 10.0 scores as well as the debated pronunciation of her surname.

Sports commentators Chris Schenkel and Cathy Rigby Mason preside over the women's individual all-round gymnastics competition, reporting that Comaneci is currently in first place with a score of 39.525, Nelli Kim and Lyudmila Turischeva (both USSR) are tied in second place with scores of 39.125, and Teodora Ungureanu (Romania) is in third place with a score of 39.025.

Schenkel and Mason interview United States Gymnastics Federation founder Frank Bare about a recent controversy involving the removal and replacement of certain gymnastic judges.

Ungureanu performs on the vault and earns a score of 9.75. Turischeva performs twice on the vault and earns a near-perfect score of 9.95. Comaneci performs twice on the vault and earns a score of 9.85 both times. Olga Korbut (USSR) performs on the uneven bars and earns a score of 9.9. Kim performs on the beam and earns a score of 9.7.

The new standings are reported, with Comaneci still in first place with a score of 49.375, Turischeva in second place with a score of 49.075, and Korbut in third place with a score of 48.875.

McKay notes that basketball player Wilt Chamberlain is in the audience observing the basketball game between USSR and Canada.

Kim performs her floor exercises and earns a score of 9.95. Turischeva performs on the uneven bars and earns a score of 9.8. Comaneci performs on the uneven bars and earns yet another 10.0, her fourth perfect score in the Games so far.

Korbut performs on the beam and earns a score of 9.5, and coach Larissa Latynina lodges a formal complaint, feeling that Korbut deserved higher marks.

The scores now stand at Comaneci with 59.36, Turischeva at 58.875, and Kim at 58.775.

McKay then profiles some of the Olympic Games' youngest participants and winners, noting that rowing coxswains tend to be extremely young, though are often not recorded as official athletes. The first official youngest gold-medal winner was 13-year-old diver Marjorie Gestring (USA) at the 1936 Olympic Summer Games in Berlin. Korbut made a splash at the 1972 Olympic Summer Games in Munich at the age of 17, but 14-year-old Comaneci has garnered the most headlines at the Montreal Games thus far.

Kim performs twice on the vault and earns a higher perfect score of 10.0. Commercials deleted.
