McKay highlights marathon runner Frank Shorter (USA) who won a gold medal in the 1972 Olympics and is the favorite to win again Sports commentator Eric Segal interviews Shorter regarding his meals he eats prior to his marathon and how it works for him. McKay provides the winning results of wrestler Ben Peterson’s (USA) match, with a score of 19-2. Cosell covers the 119 lb boxing division semifinals between Charles Mooney (USA) and Victor Rybakov (USSR). Mooney wins by decision. Sports commentator Jim Lampley interviews Jenner regarding his concern that he may be behind in the decathlon. McKay profiles athlete Nikolai Avilov (USSR) and his family, detailing his plans on retiring after the Olympic games; Jenner has currently broken Avilov’s world record. The high jump results are recapped, with Avilov in first with a score of 975; and Jenner, Dixon, Kratschmer, and Sepp Zeilbauer (Austria) tied for second with scores of 882. The total decathlon standings after four events are: Kratschmer is in first with a score of 3,444; Avilov is in second with a score of 3,426; Jenner is in third place with a score of 3,375; Zeilbauer is in fourth place with a score of 3,325; and Pihl is in fifth place with a score of 3,318.
