Summary

This program presents a portion of coverage of the 1976 summer Games of the XXI Olympiad from Montreal. Six American wrestlers have a chance to win gold. Marathon runner Frank Shorter (USA) is the favorite to win the 26-mile marathon for the second straight time. Sports commentator Keith Jackson provides standings for the sixth event of the decathlon, the110-meter hurdles, with Guido Kratschmer (West Germany) is in first with a score of 4,333; Avilov is in second with a score of 4,315; Jenner is in third with a score of 4,298; Raimo Pihl (Sweden) is in fourth with a score of 4,216; and Sepp Zeilbauer (Austria) in fifth with a score of 4,181. Jackson covers first heat of the 110-meter hurdles with Fred Dixon (USA) taking a spill and coming in last with a time of 18.11 and 574 points, and Rysard Katus (Poland) winning that heat. The second heat’s winner is Avilov with a time of 14:20 and 939 points. The third heat’s winner is Kratschmer with a time of 14:58 and 895 points, and the fourth heat’s winner is Ryszard Skowronek (Poland), with Jenner taking second place with a time of 14.84 and 866 points. Jackson provides the 110-meter hurdles results with Avilov in first with a score of 939; Katus in second with a score of 902; Kratschmer (West Germany) in third with a score of 895; Leonid Litvinenko (USSR) in fourth with a score of 880; and Skowronek in fifth with a score of 876. Avilov received the winning time, 14.20. Jackson provides overall standings after six events with Avilov in first with a score of 5,254; Kratschmer in second with a score of 5,228; Jenner in third with a score of 5,164; Zeilbauer in fourth with a score of 5,043 and Pihl in fifth with a score of 4,983. McKay discusses on how close Montreal is to the United States with views of Vermont and Lake Placid. Sports commentator Bob Beattie covers the women's volleyball championship match between Soviet Union and Japan; after the third set Japan is leading 6-0. Sports commentator Frank Gifford provides live coverage of the wrestling match 220 lb division between Russ Hellickson (USA) and Khorlod Baianmunkh (Mongolia). Hellickson wins the match. Sports commentators Jackson and Marty Liquori cover the track and field 1500m semi finals race with John Walker (New Zealand) winning the race with a time of 3:39.66. The current world record holder is Filbert Bayi (Tanzania) with a time of 3:32.2. Jackson provides the 1500m semi final results with Walker in first place; Graham Crouch (Australia) in second place; David Moorcroft (Great Britain) in third place; and Janos Zemen (Hungry) in fourth place. McKay introduces sports commentator Donna de Varona, who discusses the boutique shops on Crescent Street in Montreal.
