SIEGFRIED & ROY: SUPERSTARS OF MAGIC (TV)
Summary
This televised special, recorded at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas, features a performance of tricks and illusions from master magicians Siegfried and Roy. The program begins with a performance by the dancers of the Lido cabaret in Paris, and host Eddie Albert takes the stage and assures the audience that they will see no "hocus-pocus" or camera tricks. He introduces Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn, who make a series of flamingos appear out of thin air. Singer Lola Falana joins them onstage and performs a song, and she assists them with a trick called "The Mystery of the Death-Defying Crystal Chamber," in which she steps into an elevated glass box and disappears, seemingly replaced by a tiger. Albert chats with the magicians, who show him a large mirror and urge him to concentrate, and Loni Anderson emerges from within the glass. Siegfried then performs a series of tricks involving a hawk, in which he makes it disappear through a mirror and reappear inside a cage within a locked box. The Lido dancers perform again, and Albert and Anderson banter about the impressive tricks displayed in the show. Next, Roy performs a "phenomenon of metamorphosis," in which he is shackled and locked into a box, and then magically switches places with Siegfried on the stage.
A woman dressed in leopard print steps into a box and is seemingly changed into a real jungle cat. Next, the magicians levitate a costumed woman and cut her in half with a buzz saw, then putting her back together and causing her to vanish entirely from beneath a sheet. The Lido dancers retake the stage, performing an elaborate number set to "the jungle drums of Africa." Siegfried and Roy reappear on elephants, accompanied by their hybrid leopard/jaguar ("lepjag") pets. Siegfried then raises one of the elephants onto a platform and causes it to disappear. He then introduces a "mind-reading" act, in which Roy sits on a chair entirely covered with a sheet as audience members produce ID cards. When Siegfried removes the sheet, Roy appears to have shrunk to half his usual size, and then turns into a duck before reappearing in his normal state. The dancers perform a karate-inspired number, and Roy engages in a stick fight before being levitated on his side by Siegfried. He steps into a cage, and is seemingly replaced by a lion. The Lido dancers perform a can-can, and a tiger in an elevated cage disappears from sight, and then reappears in an urn apparently filled with fire. Roy and the tiger then fly off the stage to the sounds of "Born Free," and the magicians reappear to thank their guests and bid the audience good night. Includes commercials and promos.
