Summary
This comedy/variety special serves as the pilot to the long-running series of frenetically-paced comedy programs hosted by Dan Rowan and Dick Martin.
Highlights include the following: Rowan describes the show's inspiration from the many "love-ins" and "be-ins" from the '60s; Martin describes his "very private" summer camp; guests attempt to "find their own bag" at an eccentric cocktail party; unusual singers perform in the "New Talent Department"; a not-very-skilled ventriloquist performs a song; two drunken men perform a striptease; Rowan and Martin muse about the "modern woman"; a man and woman struggle to end their first date on the appropriate romantic note; the "Personality of the Week," a Scout Mistress, explains how she teaches her twentysomething girls important skills, like understanding alimony; Martin shows off his new invention, the "Wife-a-tron"; four fancy women sing about their friend Alice, who is beautiful and perfect "except for one little thing"; the players imagine a newscast from the far-off year of 1987, including an update on "Frank and Mia Sinatra"; and a quick journey through history pays homage to Thomas Edison, Christopher Columbus, the Wright Brothers, Samuel Colt and Alexander Graham Bell.
