I LOVE LUCY: PARIS AT LAST (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about the escapades of Lucy Ricardo, a zany redheaded housewife with show business aspirations, her Cuban-born bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo, and their best friends and neighbors Fred and Ethel Mertz.

The Ricardos and Mertzes are visiting Paris, and Lucy wants to go off and explore the city on her own. While on her way to exchange her money, she meets a shady character who offers her a better rate of exchange and she accepts; the man flees just as a policeman rounds the corner. Fred and Ethel arrive and Lucy exchanges some of their American currency with her newly-gained francs. Lucy uses some of her newfound money to purchase a painting from a street painter, but unbeknownst to her, he is a hustler who sells her one of his many copies of the same painting.

Lucy tours Paris and eventually sits down to eat at a café, despite only half-understanding the French waiter. She pretends to be a native Parisian when Fred and Ethel pass by in a tour group and recognize her. When the waiter brings her a dish containing snails, Lucy is repulsed and can’t bring herself to eat it. The chef is incensed at her request for ketchup, and at this she pays and leaves. However, the waiter recognizes the money as counterfeit and calls for the police to take Lucy into custody.

At the police station, Lucy calls Ricky and he arrives; she explains the situation to him. Lucy and Ricky have difficulty communicating with the police, so they bring out a drunk they arrested earlier who can speak Spanish and German. One of the officers can speak German and French; in this way they can facilitate communication between the police lieutenant and Lucy and the interrogation begins. Eventually Lucy is charged let off with a fine and released. However, Ethel and Fred are brought in on similar charges and the cycle begins anew. Eventually the four of them meet back at the apartment and try to get over their ordeal, only to find that they have collectively purchased three copies of the hustlers’ painting.
