In this drama, salesman Arthur Summers prepares to depart for a week-long business trip, leaving his high-strung wife Mary alone in their new home for the first time since moving away from her parents. Observing that she seems to be "afraid of everything," Arthur wonders if Mary should consider pursuing psychiatric help. After he departs, Mary tries to resist the urge to immediately phone her parents. She hears strange noises and is horrified to discover an intruder, young Ted Lambert, who implies that he has escaped from a mental hospital. To his surprise, she shows him kindness and offers to keep him hidden in her home, explaining that she understands his feelings of extreme anxiety and paranoia.
The two begin to bond as Mary confides that she hasn't felt truly safe since childhood, and she admits that she only married the wealthy Arthur in order to assist her parents financially. She describes a recurring nightmare – or perhaps premonition – in which she is attacked in her bedroom by some unknown force. When two men from the hospital arrive in search of the escapee, Mary feigns ignorance and Ted remains safely hidden. When Arthur suddenly returns home and finds her in the bedroom, she coldly shoots him dead and then telephones her mother and father, stating that "now she can come home." Commercials deleted.
