LOVE THAT BOB: HIRING A RECEPTIONIST (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about ladies’-man photographer Bob Collins, also called “The Bob Cummings Show.” In this episode, Bob comes to the studio and is pleased to see that the day’s photo shoot involves an attractive young woman in a bubble bath. Margaret stops by to invite him to lunch, but he explains that he is interviewing potential receptionist candidates that day, having decided to hire a “pretty girl” to assist Schultzy. Schultzy notes sadly that she could use some help, as Bob is always requesting that she dress up in bizarre outfits for various photos, including a gorilla suit. Margaret reminds Bob about a party that night given by a Mrs. Anderson, who intends to show him off as an eligible bachelor, and he agrees to attend. Later, Schultzy tells Bob that she “weeded out” the pool of potential receptionists, and he tells her that he wants “a Monroe type.” He is less than pleased, therefore, by the mannish and austere candidate Pamela Livingstone, who turns out to have extensive experience and credentials. He tries to trick her by dictating an absurdly complex letter, but she pulls off the task with ease. In desperation, Bob decides to antagonize her “no-nonsense” personality by making advances on her, but she seems unfazed by his charm, declaring the interview merely “interesting” before leaving. An attractive young woman comes by next, and Bob hires her on the spot.

At Margaret’s home, Mrs. Anderson arrives with a young woman, Ruby, and she explains that Bob is “eccentric,” revealing that he keeps a gorilla as his assistant, having mistaken a disguised Schultzy as a real ape. Not realizing the woman’s error, Margaret explains that Schultzy is in love with Bob, but that it is “hopeless.” Bob soon arrives and tells them that Schultzy quit because of the new girl, and Margaret attempts to explain that she has feelings for him, but he misunderstands and decides that she needs a new love interest, deciding to ask Mrs. Anderson if she may attend the singles’ party that night. He turns on the charm and Mrs. Anderson is flattered, but she is then horrified when Bob asks to bring his “assistant” along, picturing a disastrous party with a gussied-up gorilla in attendance, and she refuses to allow it. Later, Bob speculates about Mrs. Anderson’s mental wellbeing to Margaret, explaining that she provided him with a new date for Schultzy: a chimp named George. Commercials deleted.
