MISTER ED: WILBUR GETS THE MESSAGE . . . ABOUT PAYROLL SAVINGS! (TV)
Summary
A special presentation in this comedy series about a talking horse. In this public service announcement on behalf of the U.S. Treasury, Wilbur practices his speech for Carol about payroll savings plans being sold to employees. Soon, he’s confusing his speech with Carol’s sponge cake recipe. Afterward, Wilbur goes out to the barn to try his modified speech on Ed. Ed questions whether Wilbur sounds sincere, noting that he’s cashed in all of his own savings bonds. Wilbur argues that he currently has no need for savings bonds, despite Ed’s protests. When Wilbur points out that Ed has no savings bonds either, Ed calls the Treasury Department in Washington D.C. to order some. Back in the house, electrician Mr. Davis gives Wilbur some tips on how to make his speech better, starting with being a bond owner. Wilbur says that, since he’s a self-employed architect, he can no longer get bonds. Mr. Davis tells him why that’s not true. Returning to Carol, she tells Wilbur that he feels guilty since they’ve never had savings bonds after buying the house. Carol concurs with Mr. Davis’s comments, saying that they should sign up for a regular bond at the bank each month. Meanwhile, Ed is aghast to learn that animals can’t own savings bonds. Wilbur tells him about the savings plan on which he and Carol agreed, making Ed feel more secure. Actor Alan Young then addresses the audience and promotes the importance of payroll savings for Americans. Commercials deleted.
