MANY SIDES OF DON RICKLES, THE {DON ADAMS, HARVEY KORMAN, ROBERT GOULET} (TV)
Summary
This televised special features the comedy of Don Rickles and special guests Harvey Korman, Robert Goulet and Don Adams. The program begins as the friends chat backstage, telling jokes and stories about the influential Johnny Carson, among others, and sharing how they each began in show business. Korman reveals his Shakespearean past, and Goulet clarifies that he is not, in fact, from Canada. In the first sketch, Rickles portrays "Brother Gregory," a humble monk about whose life a Hollywood motion picture is being filmed. When he arrives onset, he is starstruck by the famous actor portraying him, played by Goulet, and he is encouraged to speak up and give input about the scenes. When the filming begins, however, he is dismayed by the director's strangely "hip" take on his life, including a romantic scene with a buxom "homeless waif," but he eventually gives in when the director threatens to rescind a lavish gift given to the monastery. Backstage, Rickles jokingly introduces Goulet and shows off the set built for him, instructing the cameraman to take "arty shots" of him as he sings "A Real, Live Girl" and "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" Next, Rickles portrays a disgruntled husband who spends the evening arguing with his wife, but is then cheered by a patriotic late-night program on television.
In the following sketch, Korman portrays a hippie guru who teaches his followers how to truly "feel" and "see" one another. They are interrupted by an uptight pair of newlyweds intending to celebrate their honeymoon at the same motel, and the couple decides to be "good sports." They find themselves engaged with the eccentric group, and they experience a "sensory awakening" along with them before quickly returning to their regular lives. Korman then introduces Rickles to three scientists, who analyze his comedic style, asking about his childhood and his particular brand of "ribbing." Rickles explains the tension of "attack humor" and reveals his methods for self-editing, adding that his public and private personas are not quite the same and that he finds that many people either strongly love or hate him. He then closes the show by talking about his young family and reading a quote about the transition from childhood to adulthood. Includes commercials and promos.
