BULLWINKLE SHOW, THE: UPSIDAISIUM {EP. 61, 62} (TV)
Summary
One in this animated series about two friends – a gormless moose named Bullwinkle and an intelligent flying squirrel named Rocky -- and their frequent encounters with their arch enemies, Soviet spies Boris Badenov and Natasha. Rocky and Bullwinkle manage to get inside the helicopter as it spins upside-down. The mysterious pilot is revealed to be none other than Captain Peter Peachfuzz, whom Rocky recognizes from their previous encounters. The helicopter nearly crashes, but Rocky manages to save it. Captain Peachfuzz reveals that he is the new head of G-2 and is interested in Bullwinkle's mine due to its supply of something called "upsidaisium," which he says is vital to national defense. Before he can explain further, Captain Peachfuzz pulls the wrong lever and disables the helicopter. He and Bullwinkle bail out and Rocky flies to safety. However, the trio is now completely lost. Peachfuzz recounts more of his story: after accidentally docking the S. S. Andalusia in the middle of Wall Street, Peachfuzz was reassigned by the United States Maritime Commission to "Q-2" for the "important" task of counting penguin eggs in the South Pole, a motion designed to simply rid them of Peachfuzz's presence. However, a typist error causes Peachfuzz to be assigned as the new head of G-2 instead. Rocky and Bullwinkle are still puzzled as to the meaning of "upsidaisium," and Peachfuzz prepares to explain. Also includes a "Fractured Fairy Tales" story about the Pied Piper. The story begins as a young man practices ceaselessly on his flute (or "flatt") to become a wandering minstrel. During his first concert, however, he discovers that his instrument is so high-pitched that it is inaudible to human beings. Only mice can hear the music and detest it so much that they leave en masse. The Pied Piper decides to use this to his advantage and becomes an exterminator. Soon the king calls for his services in getting rid of his mother-in-law. Realizing that only creatures such as mice can hear the Pied Piper's music, they decide to trick the mother-in-law into eating copious amounts of cheese, hoping that it will alter her hearing and expose her to the music. The king eats cheese alongside her for months before putting his plan into action, but the Piper finds that the mother-in-law actually likes his music, and he falls in love with her. The king is driven out of the kingdom by the flatt music and never heard from again. Soon the Pied Piper and mother-in-law are married and hold frequent concerts of the Piper's music, complete with a cheese stand to help the audience listen. In "Peabody's Improbable History," Sherman and Peabody use the WABAC machine to go to March 9th, 1831, where the newly-formed French Foreign Legion is hold up in a fort in the Sahara, surrounded by tens of thousands of hostile Algerians. They try to warn the soldiers, but they are busy playing horseshoes and cannot be bothered to listen. Peabody tricks the Sheik leading the enemy forces into the fort to convince the soldiers of the threat, but they invite the Sheik to join their horseshoe game and surprisingly it works. With the score tied the Sheik takes his men to eat dinner and return later, but Peabody discovers that the Algerians have planted a bomb somewhere in the fort set to go off soon. They locate the bomb disguised as an officer's wristwatch, and Peabody lobs it into the Sheik's camp, blowing it up. The Sheik retreats and the Legion returns to their horseshoe game. Other highlights include: a "Mr. Know-it-All" segment about helping monsters created by science adapt to modern society; and a "Bullwinkle's Corner" featuring the poem "Rockabye Baby." Commercials deleted. This is the first of two programs on this asset. (The "Bullwinkle Show" "Upsidaisium" series continues on ACCNUM 108870).
