IT'S A LIVING: CASSIE'S COWBOY (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the staff of a high-class lounge in Los Angeles, including Sonny, the dissonant lounge singer. In this episode, the wait staff is all a-flutter when a famously wealthy and unmarried Texas oil baron, Hank Dobson, comes into the restaurant. Nancy assigns Cassie to handle the table, despite it being in Dot's section, and Sonny plays a number of Southern-style songs to appease the man. The women all attempt to appeal to Dobson, with Amy mentioning that her father works for his company, but he takes a shine to Cassie and reserves the entire restaurant for the following night, requesting her as his date. Dot and the others are jealous of Cassie's "fairy tale," and Sonny dons a corny cowboy outfit in the hopes of scoring big tips. Cassie arrives in a fancy dress and is surprised to learn that he intends to spend the evening alone with her, saying that she deserves to be waited on for a change, and she appoints an annoyed Nancy as their server.

Later, Cassie gushes to Jan that Dobson is "the one" and that she is very happy with him, despite his reputation as a womanizer. He fails to call the next day and Cassie notices Jan's "I-told-you-so" attitude, but then finds Dobson's gift of an expensive fur coat in her locker, and their affair continues. Two weeks later, Cassie requests that her friends cover her shift so she can spend the weekend in Houston with Dobson, but Jan refuses, saying they have helped her enough and that she cannot miss her daughter's school play. Cassie is stung, explaining that it is hard to say no to Dobson, and everyone is annoyed when Nancy changes the schedule and forces Jan to work Cassie's shift after all. Jan arrives on the night in question, but Cassie shows up as well and apologizes, explaining that she put her foot down with Dobson and urging Jan to head to the play. Dobson arrives, however, and asks Cassie to leave for Houston with him, revealing that he was the one who caused Nancy to alter the schedule. Cassie breaks up with him on the spot and returns the coat, disliking his demanding ways, and her friends comfort her, unconvincingly telling her that she is "better off" without the extravagant man.
