MOONLIGHTING: MADDIE'S TURN TO CRY (TV)
Summary
One in this comedic private detective series about David Addison and Maddie Hayes of the Blue Moon Detective Agency. This program begins with a series of clips of viewers describing the events of the previous episode, “Sam & Dave” (T:09728). In this episode, Maddie wakes up in Sam’s bed and heads off to work, seemingly troubled about the previous night’s incidents. At the office, an over-caffeinated Bert enters and reveals that he caught Mr. and Mrs. McClafferty together at a hotel, confirming the suspicions of Mr. McClafferty’s mistress, Elaine. David and the other men are entertained by the photographs, but when they are along, Maddie tries to get David to talk about the previous night. He doesn’t seem to remember their conversation, however, and takes a flirtatious phone call from Monique and makes a date for that night. When Maddie asks what it was he had to tell her, he merely suggests that they should promote Bert. Agnes tells Maddie that she has scheduled for her an appointment with Elaine, and then admits that David’s blasé nature is “a great act” for her, and says there is no Monique. When Maddie and David go to meet their client, Maddie asks about his supposed girlfriend, but he confirms nothing. Elaine is unmoved by the photos of her lover and his wife, saying she needs to hear audio recordings of their liaisons.
Maddie and David argue in the car about the case, with Maddie eventually stating that David is “jealous” of her and Sam. When they return to the office, Sam is there, and Agnes is thoroughly smitten by him. After some awkward conversation, Sam attempts to make another date with Maddie, although she says she will be working late that night. Later, she and David stake out the McClafferty home and he cracks jokes to pass the time. Mrs. McClafferty soon returns to the home and they hear her crying over the listening devices they have planted in the house. They observe her writing a note and pulling out a gun, and though they sprint for the house, they are too slow and she shoots herself. As her body is taken away, Maddie and David provide statements to the police and talk to Mr. McClafferty, who blames himself and claims he was in love with his wife and planning to end things with Elaine, and he is surprised to hear that it was she who hired them. In the car, David blames the husband’s affairs for the tragedy, although Maddie argues that one cannot control one’s heart. When she returns home late, she finds Sam there waiting for her. He spontaneously proposes, and she is overwhelmed and “confused,” unable to give an answer.
Maddie then hurries over to David’s home and demands to know what he had intended to say to her two nights ago. He avoids a reply, and she observes the sparseness of his home. She admits that Sam is “perfect” for her, but that she has her doubts, and he hugs her as they finally admit their “hate” for one another and kiss. She notes that she cries easily and is making a mess of her makeup, but then remembers that Mrs. McClafferty’s makeup was intact when she was taken from the house, despite the fact that they heard her weeping, and she guesses that someone orchestrated her fake suicide. She and David rush to Elaine’s home, where they find Mr. McClafferty hiding in her closet, implying he was in on it. The criminals run away, and the detectives pursue them, hijacking an ice cream truck and chasing them into a bowling alley before finally managing to “strike” them out. Once they are arrested and the case is closed, Maddie remembers that Sam is still at her home, and he awakens to find her gone. Includes commercials.
