CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {STEVE LAWRENCE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guest Steve Lawrence.

The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, welcoming Los Angeles Dodgers player Don Sutton and actor Nick Benedict (Phillip Brent on the soap opera "All My Children"), who answers a few audience questions about his life and roles.

In the first sketch, a busy married couple struggles to find time within their hectic work schedules to spend time together — and also to welcome their first child. Lawrence sings "In the Still of the Night," and in the next sketch, young Carla annoys her co-worker Marge with a riddle to which she doesn't know the answer herself. Another colleague joins them and offers another brain-teaser, further infuriating the exasperated Marge, who's still stuck on the first one.

Following this, the long-suffering Mr. Tudball obtains an intercom machine and tries to use it to communicate with ditzy secretary Mrs. Wiggins in the next room, though she is predictably confused by its buttons. After much back-and-forth over a simple dictation, Mr. Tudball "starts to get steamed" and again tries to instruct her to address him only through the machine, but he eventually gives up in despair.

Lawrence shows Burnett some matchbooks featuring interesting historical trivia, and the two sing songs from the early part of the 20th century, including "By the Beautiful Sea," "I Ain't Got Nobody," and "The 12th Street Rag." Finally, in a salute to Universal Studios, the performers parody "Hamlet" (1948), "Pete 'n' Tillie" (1972) (in which Burnett starred opposite Walter Matthau "), "Rooster Cogburn" (1975), "Freud" (1962), "Earthquake" (1974), and "The Glenn Miller Story" (1954), featuring such Miller tunes as "Moonlight Serenade," "At Last," "I've Got A Girl in Kalamazoo," and "Serenade in Blue." Burnett then closes the show by singing her signature good-night song and adding her guest's autographs to her guest book. Includes commercials and promos.
