CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {BERNADETTE PETERS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guest Bernadette Peters. The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, briefly discussing her three daughters, her encounter with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and her hopes to make a movie with good pal Lucille Ball.
In the first sketch, a distraught woman, Mrs. Kempley, works through her personal issues with psychiatrist Dr. Hoffman, finally confessing that she can't let go of a certain childhood trauma in which "this fat kid" stole her favorite sandbox pail. Dr. Hoffman is soon shocked to realize that he is the "fatso" in question, and the two resume their decades-old squabble, eventually discovering that pail theft is something of a compulsion for the doctor. Next, Conway portrays an unlucky singer attempting to record a few tunes, and Peters performs "He's the Wizard" from "The Wiz."
In the next sketch, an eccentric old lady attempts to report a mugging to the police and encounters the thief himself at the precinct, but the cop in charge seems unconvinced — even though the purse in his possession matches her hat — and the mugger stages several unconvincing scenarios to prove his "innocence" in the crime. Next, two nurses in an emergency room stand up to a bossy doctor and refuse to administer a life-saving shot to a panicked snake-bite victim until the doctor apologizes for his rudeness; the patient begins to succumb to his deadly symptoms as they argue amongst themselves.
Finally, Peters introduces a "mini-musical" celebrating the works of Irving Berlin, and a World War II-themed comedy/drama features such songs as "Everybody's Doing It," "Steppin' Out with My Baby," "Cheek to Cheek," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning," "What'll I Do," "You're Just In Love," "My Defenses Are Down," "Shaking the Blues Away," "All By Myself," "Say It Isn't So," "All Of My Life," "The Girl That I Marry," "Blue Skies," "Let Yourself Go" and "Change Partners." Burnett then closes the show by singing her signature good-night song and adding Peters' autograph to her guest book. Includes commercials and promos.
