CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE (EMMETT KELLY, JACKSON 5) (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guests the Jackson 5 and iconic clown Emmett Kelly.
The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, briefly discussing her new book, "What I Want To Be When I Grow Up," and performing her iconic Tarzan yell. Next, Burnett celebrates "anybody named Jackson," and the family quintet joins her onstage and performs "Forever Came Today."
In the first sketch, an important politician in search of a cabinet position prepares for a meeting with the president, though his loyal wife, who recently suffered a head injury on the campaign trail, exhibits a variety of odd behaviors, mostly toward her husband's put-upon assistant, Carlisle. After a series of misunderstandings, the husband angrily fires Carlisle for "his" mistakes — but then reveals himself to be just as peculiar as his wife.
Vicki Lawrence joins the Jackson 5 for "Body Language (Do the Love Dance)"; in "The Late Late Movie," entitled "A Swiped Life," lonely young Patsy obsessively sketches a nearby lighthouse, much to the consternation of her aunt Leona, while her much flashier twin sister Vera paints the town red with her friends. Lighthouse keeper Bill Terwilliger stops by in search of a new light bulb and strikes up a friendship with Patsy, who is also "too sensitive for phoniness," but Vera breezes in and captures his attention with her "strumpet talk." Months later, Patsy pines over Bill, who has married Vera and moved to New York City. Patsy then sees her chance at a new life when Vera drowns during a stormy boating trip -- during which they were dressed alike. Patsy adopts her sister's imperious mannerisms and heads to New York to reunite with Bill, but she soon learns that Vera and Bill were on the brink of divorce, thanks to her many, many affairs. Patsy confesses her identity to Bill, who is delighted; but upon discovering Bill's secret girlfriend, Patsy gives up and returns to "her" fleet of suitors.
Finally, Burnett portrays her famous charwoman character, who then befriends a lonely clown, Kelly. He demonstrates a few tricks, and she serenades him with "It's Only a Paper Moon" and "Look For the Silver Lining." Burnett closes the show by singing her signature good-night song and adding autographs from Kelly and the Jackson 5 to her guest book. Includes commercials and promos.
