CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {FAMILY SHOW} {NINTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The ninth season finale in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program, a "family show," features no celebrity guests.
The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, discussing whether her "kinda hammy" kids will enter show business; her talented sound-effects guy Ross Murray; plans for the show's tenth season; her upcoming two-week gig in Vegas with Tim Conway; and a greeting for a nervous 14-year-old with a smitten grandpa.
In the first sketch, an installment of "The Family," Ed's young protégé Mickey worries about running the hardware store alone while Ed is off at an exhibition in Chicago. Ed agrees to take his helpful young assistant with him — despite having told Eunice that she couldn't join him. Eunice and Thelma return from the podiatrist, arguing as usual, and Eunice is highly annoyed to learn of Ed and Mickey's travel plans. She eventually browbeats him into changing his mind and taking her along on the "glamorous" trip. Ed soon loses patience and switches back to the agreeable Mickey.
Next, the put-upon Mr. Tudball attempts to surprise disinterested secretary Mrs. Wiggins for her birthday, though she fails to grasp the meaning of his greeting when he dictates it to her in letter form. She is confused by his offers of a small gift, a cake, and a rather dismal noisemaker.
The Ernest Flatt Dancers then perform a youthful choreographed number set to "Baby Face," after which Burnett and Korman portray a couple whose 12-year marriage suffers when, after a date night at the movies, the two begins critiquing the various "ghastly things" that bother them about eacg otherFinally, Burnett, dressed as her washerwoman character, reflects on the season's best moments and bids farewell to her regular co-stars as she closes the ninth season with an extended version of her goodnight song. Includes commercials and promos.
