DOLLY {DUDLEY MOORE, HULK HOGAN, PEE-WEE HERMAN} {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this musical variety series hosted by Dolly Parton. Parton opens the episode from her bathtub, admitting that she is nervous about her new show, and then takes the stage to sing "Bubbling Over." She chats with the audience about her excitement and hard work for the show, and then prepares for a "date" with guest star Dudley Moore. He charms her with poetry and champagne, and she decides to practice her "serious acting" by improvising a love scene with him. After their romantic encounter, Moore closes the segment by playing a piano piece for her. After a "Special Delivery" video message from fans, Parton explains that she was inspired by a silly tabloid story to create a music video with Hulk Hogan for the song "Headlock on My Heart," which tells the story of a woman who becomes infatuated with and eventually marries a famous wrestler known as Starlight Starbright. Parton then sings "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" with her quartet of a cappella backup singers, and introduces her next guest, Pee-Wee Herman.

Herman anxiously awaits Parton's arrival at his lively playhouse, and upon her arrival he presents her with a slightly non-traditional portrait and serves her a pretend dinner, and the two sing "Hey, Good Lookin'" together. Parton sings "Someone to Watch Over Me" from the musical "Oh, Kay!" solo, and then sits down with guest Oprah Winfrey for a chat. The two perform a short comedy sketch in which Parton arrives to audition for "Porgy and Bess," apparently confused about why she is "desperately wrong" for the role. Parton briefly encounters NYC Mayor Ed Koch in her "Out and About" segment, and then sings "My Tennessee Mountain Home." She discusses her humble Southern childhood with her parents and eleven siblings and relates the story behind her song "Coat of Many Colors," which she then performs. Parton then sings a short song entitled "Look on the Bright Side" and invites her audience to share personal pieces of good news, and she responds to a few questions about her musical training and recent weight loss. Winfrey rejoins Parton and explains that she herself only ever sings in church, so Parton brings a gospel choir onstage and they sing "This Little Light of Mine." Parton then closes the show with "I Will Always Love You." Includes commercials and promos.
