MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., THE {THE MAN FROM UNCLE}: THE INDIAN AFFAIRS AFFAIR (TV)

Summary

One in this series of tongue-in-cheek spy dramas about superagents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. In this episode, Solo finds that he is being followed by several Native Americans, who attack him and Illya with flaming arrows and tomahawks. They escape, and back at headquarters, Waverly explains that THRUSH is working on a new type of hydrogen bomb with the help of a scientist, Yahama, and they have kidnapped an Indian chief, Highcloud, as part of the plan. Kuryakin is assigned to journey to the reservation to find out more information, and Solo is sent to track down the man’s daughter. At the THRUSH lair, the leader of the plot, L.C. Carson, summons Highcloud to him and demands that he call his reservation to alleviate their fears, threatening the lives of his tribe, but the chief refuses to help the criminals. Elsewhere, Solo finds Highcloud’s daughter, Charisma, performing a tribal war dance at a saloon. When he talks to her, she is doubtful of his claims about her father’s kidnapping, but she herself is soon abducted by THRUSH agents. She is taken to Oklahoma, near her reservation, and learns that THRUSH wants her group’s land to test their bomb. The racist Carson tells her how her people wiped out a group of settlers a hundred years ago, saying the “savages” have no sense of guilt. He brings Highcloud in and tells him about how Charisma is demeaning their traditions by performing in the saloon, and Highcloud disowns her in anger. As Solo eavesdrops outside, Carson ponders killing Highcloud, but Charisma says that she can convince him to cooperate.

At the reservation, Kuryakin arrives and breaks in, planning to look for Yahama, but he is quickly captured by several natives. When they threaten him, however, he says he has a plan to rescue Highcloud and defeat THRUSH. Charisma talks to her father and tries to explain why she lives in New York, away from the reservation. Solo fires a communication dart through the window and speaks to them both, telling them that Kuryakin is handling matters with the tribe. Indeed, Kuryakin soon arrives at the THRUSH compound dressed as an Indian and demands to speak with Highcloud face-to-face. Solo attempts to contact Kuryakin, but with no luck, and he is soon attacked by Carson’s cowboy henchman, but he quickly subdues him. When they meet, Kuryakin “communicates” with Highcloud with gestures, and the chief plays along. When they are alone, Kuryakin calls for reinforcements over the phone. Left with Charisma, Carson attempts to assault her and demands the “secrets” of her tribe, and Solo bursts in to save her. Solo and Kuryakin find one another, but they, Highcloud and Charisma are captured by THRUSH and tied up.

As they attempt to free themselves, a group of criminals from around the world gathers with Yahama and they each give him a different item. He explains that they were all unintentionally aiding the creation of a “transistorized” hydrogen bomb, which he assembles before their eyes. The bomb is placed in a briefcase, and Carson warns the group that if the case is opened improperly, it will detonate. Solo and Kuryakin escape their bonds with Charisma’s help and incapacitate Carson’s men with sleeping gas, and then pursue Carson and the other criminals with the help of Highcloud’s tribe. They meet on a field, with Carson noting the similarity to the century-old massacre, and battle for a time until Solo and his men overtake the crooks. Carson offers to trade the combination for the briefcase containing the bomb for his freedom, but Solo boldly shoots each decoy briefcase open in turn, explaining that he himself used a similar strategy once and knows that Carson would have kept the bomb in his own possession. Waverly arrives and reveals that Yahama gave them up, and a frustrated Carson swears revenge as he is taken away. The case solved, Charisma plans to return to New York, having made up with her father, and he advises her to find a nice Indian boy and settle down, although it is clear that Kuryakin does not count, despite his effective disguise.
