MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., THE {THE MAN FROM UNCLE}: THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD AFFAIR, PT. 1 {SERIES FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The finale in this series of of tongue-in-cheek spy dramas about superagents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. In part one of this two-part episode, Solo and Kuryakin fire upon a house and order a man, Webb, to give himself up, but he escapes with the help of Mrs. Kingsley. Waverly meets with Solo and Kuryakin about the disappearance of another agent, Robert Kingsley, and their failure to capture Webb. Two other operatives search Kingsley’s office in Hong Kong and discover a capsule with a mysterious red gas. When they return to Waverly’s office, they explain that it had a strange effect on them and that they “just stood there” passively for a few minutes before it evaporated. At this strange news, they redouble their efforts to find Kingsley. Solo and Kuryakin visit Mrs. Kingsley, who claims that her husband worked a desk job and could not have been kidnapped, saying that she knows nothing about any capsule. They discover a paper of Kingsley’s with “7” written obsessively all over it, and then learn that a prominent chemist, a Dr. Erikson, has also gone missing under similar circumstances. Elsewhere, Erikson and Kingsley meet up and declare their collaboration to be a “historic moment” that will change the fate of the world. Erikson says that his daughter, Anna, is joining them soon, and in Berlin, she regretfully leaves her American squeeze, Steve, behind as she leaves to join her father.
Mrs. Kingsley then meets up with other members of THRUSH, and a man named Veeth argues that they should take over “the Kingsley project” as soon as possible. Webb, however, refuses, saying they must bide their time and wait until the plan advances to make their move. Solo and Kuryakin track Anna to Hong Kong, where she gets onboard a ship. Before they can follow, however, their car is destroyed by a crane, and they barely manage to escape. They pilot a helicopter and pursue the ship, which shoots at them, but they land on the deck and demand to see Anna, Erikson and Kingsley. Anna appears and claims ignorance, and Solo and Kuryakin are overpowered. Webb and Mrs. Kingsley receive word that the ship is headed for the Himalayas, and Mrs. Kingsley smugly reveals that her husband is unaware of her involvement with THRUSH. A General Harmon is recruited for the project, and fights his way through a sea of reporters to get on a plane with his soldiers, telling them that they are now a “security force” who will contribute to great change. Solo and Kuryakin awaken on the now-vacated ship and call Waverly to send a rescue seaplane, which he does. When they return to headquarters, they learn that several more well-known scientists, as well as PR expert, have been kidnapped. In the Himalayan compound, however, Dr. Vanovech expresses his willing commitment to the project. The THRUSH members continue arguing, and Veeth threatens Webb, but Mrs. Kingsley calmly shoots him.
At his home, Anna’s boyfriend Steve surprises a burglar, and it is revealed that his father is Professor David Garrow, a famous geneticist. When Garrow travels to an airport with his wife and son to go to a conference, he is kidnapped by Kingsley’s men, and Solo and Kuryakin observe. They later tell Steve and Mrs. Garrow that they planted a homing device on him and allowed him to be taken, much to their displeasure. They are even more unsettled when they receive an envelope full of money in the mail. When Solo locates Garrow and charters a plane to the Himalayas, Harmon orders a missile to take him out, and he parachutes out of the plane before it crashes. Garrow wakes up in an exact replica of his home office and is baffled until Kingsley, his “new employer,” explains that he is one of the “seven intellectual wonders of the world” who will help “alter the course of destiny” together. He promises that his family will receive ample monthly payments, but Garrow refuses to help with the “unholy project.” Kingsley informs him that they found the tracking device and that no help is coming, and threatens his family if he refuses. Solo staggers alone through the desert, and Kuryakin searches for him with Steve’s help, disturbed to find his bloodied parachute. Solo finally comes across Kingsley’s massive compound, and when he collapses, he is rescued by a strange band of robed people. Harmon states that they should kill Solo to protect their plans, but Kingsley refuses. The general, annoyed, orders a “saturation radar check” of the area and orders everything around the compound destroyed, and this includes Kuryakin and Steve’s helicopter. Continues in B:12272.
