MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: ENCOUNTER (TV)
Summary
One in this series of adventure dramas about the exploits of the Impossible Missions Force.
Criminals named Frank Brady and Martin Stoner are extorting legitimate businesses into criminal partnerships. This includes committing arson against a warehouse owned by a man who refused to do business with them; one of their gang members is killed during the raid. The IMF’s mission is to get evidence against Brady and Stoner that will stop their extortion for good. Lisa is to impersonate Lois Stoner, Martin’s alcoholic wife. At a local bar, Jim picks up Lois while the IMF observe. He brings her back to his apartment, where she is sedated and taken to a sanitarium while Lisa assumes her appearance with a mask.
Lisa interrupts a meeting between Brady and Stoner and feigns an emotional outburst. This provides a distraction for her to place a listening device on Brady’s desk. Stoner has his henchman forcibly eject Lisa from the office. When he comes home to her later they have an argument. She suggests that she check herself in to rehabilitation clinic and Stoner agrees. Brady, fearful that Lisa could have information about his operation that she might leak to the district attorney, sends his henchman Dekker to go join the rehabilitation group and make sure she gets well.
Willy visits Brady, claiming to be the brother of the man who died in the arson attempt. When refused entry, Willy bursts in and holds Brady at gunpoint. Brady pays him off and offers him the chance to take his brother’s place, which Willy seems to accept. Dekker joins the rehabilitation group, which unbeknownst to him is a fake group organized by Jim. Meanwhile, Lois goes through withdrawal in the sanitarium, watched over by Barney.
Over the course of the rehabilitation groups’ exercises, Lisa makes Dekker believe that she recognizes him. As the discussions commence, she hints that she knows about Brady’s secret dealings. Eventually Dekker strikes her in a moment of rage and leaves. Meanwhile, Brady’s men recruit Willy for a demolitions strike against another uncooperative “client.” Willy informs Jim of this. When Brady hears Dekker’s report from the rehabilitation group, he order’s Lois to be killed despite Stoner’s protests.
Dekker and another of Brady’s men stalk the grounds of the fake rehabilitation clinic and lure out Lisa. She is chased across the grounds and shot. Jim disables the assailant and rescues Lisa, who survives the gunshot wound. Jim takes her to the hospital, but she wishes to continue with the mission and re-assumes her disguise. Meanwhile, the real Lois breaks out of the sanitarium. Willy participates in the demolitions operation, but manages to trigger an alarm. The police arrive to arrest the other men while Willy gets away.
Barney discovers that Lois has escaped. Willy returns to Brady, making it seem as though the operation’s failure was a set-up due to a leak to the police. Brady believes Lois and Stoner are both responsible and orders Willy to kill them both. Lisa catches up to Stoner in a parking lot and explains that someone tried to kill her. Willy drives by, throwing an explosive in his wake. Stoner and Lisa escape unharmed and Stoner is convinced that Brady was trying to kill them both. Lisa gets him to attempt to blackmail Brady into leaving him alone.
At a bar, Lois drunkenly calls Brady, alerting him to the fact that the hit on her and Stoner failed. Stoner goes to a bank to retrieve a reel of microfilm containing incriminating evidence against Brady. Brady and Dekker arrive and chase Stoner through the bank, shooting him. Jim and Willy are on hand to retrieve the microfilm as the police take Brady and Dekker away. The episode ends as Barney finds a disheveled Lois in a bar, offering his help in overcoming her alcoholism. Commercials deleted.
