ST. ELSEWHERE: ALL ABOUT EVE (TV)
Summary
One in this medical drama series set in St. Eligius hospital in Boston. In this episode, Caldwell and Halloran continue their secret affair, though Caldwell is then attacked by a gang of masked Irishmen as punishment for his treatment of Eddie Carson. Elsewhere, Dr. Westphall is disappointed but understanding when Mrs. Catalano explains that she intends to move back home for good, and he wonders how he will break the news to Tommy. Ehrlich complains to Helen about a demanding patient and then is surprised to see that Roberta is now working as a candy striper, having been "cured" of her sexual dysfunction, and he is pleased when she notes his "positive influence" on her and asks to spend more time with him. Craig chats with his heart-transplant patient Eve, who is anxious to go home and asks him about becoming an organ donor herself. Eddie sadly identifies the bodies of his aunt and uncle, killed in the car bombing, and Caldwell is rushed into the ER with a variety of injuries. Father Flynn talks to Westphall about the escalating "gang war" between the Irish, suggesting that he should send Eddie away from St. Eligius as soon as possible, though Westphall seems reluctant to abandon him. When Halloran hears of Caldwell's violent "mugging," she rushes to his side, inadvertently revealing their affair to everyone.
Eve is amused when Gretchen, the eccentric dietitian, arrives to give her some simplistic advice on post-operative health, and Ehrlich eagerly anticipates his rendezvous with Roberta, confident that matters will quickly turn physical. Craig is annoyed to belatedly learn of Caldwell and Halloran's relationship, and Elizabeth Westphall soon arrives and offers to forgo Vassar in favor of a Boston college, worried that her father will have to sacrifice even more of his personal life to care for Tommy now that the housekeeper is leaving. Ehrlich is stunned when Roberta informs him that he has "the wrong idea" about their time together and states that Dr. Weiss has urged her never to be intimate with him, and as Craig works on another patient, Eve suddenly takes a turn for the worse and dies from surgery complications before he can reach her. Later, Roberta overhears Ehrlich being particularly harsh to Axelrod and guesses that he is trying to impress her with his toughness, but she gives him the key to her apartment all the same, wanting to have a meaningful talk later on. Westphall attempts to have a "man-to-man" conversation with Tommy about Mrs. Catalano's departure, and the boy is greatly upset by the news.
Craig struggles with his grief over Eve as Ridley talks to Eddie, questioning him about his involvement with the Troubles back in Ireland, including his brother's death and his own murderous actions, and Eddie tearfully states that he has many regrets. Ehrlich seeks Martin's advice about Roberta, though she misunderstands his intentions, and Tommy's doctor suggests to Westphall that he send the boy to a special boarding school, but Westphall flatly refuses. He then finds that Tommy has disappeared, though he quickly finds him in the nursery with Morrison's baby. Ehrlich decides to surprise Roberta in his "natural" state, though is embarrassed when Weiss joins them for the evening, and Craig has a heart-to-heart with Morrison about Eve, who received Morrison's wife's heart before her death, admitting that he sometimes "feels like God" when he performs a successful operation but still cannot truly understand why people must die.
