BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE: A CRIME MOST FOUL (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of a Chicago psychologist.

Bob becomes obsessed with a new tape recorder he has purchased, using it constantly. He starts by using it to record his group therapy sessions, then pesters Emily when he tries to record her snoring at night. Soon Bob cannot find the tape recorder and concludes that it was stolen. He suspects everyone of having a motive to take it, questioning Emily and Howard. He infiltrates Jerry's office and appears to find it, only for Jerry to reveal that he bought a same-model tape recorder himself. Bob reveals to Emily that he is upset because of an incident in his childhood when his prized harmonica was taken, making him defensive when his possessions disappear.

Bob confronts his therapy group about the missing tape recorder, making them all suspicious of each other. Mr. Herd admits to taking it, but Bob soon discovers that he compulsively confesses to being a thief whenever something is missing. However, Bob locates his tape recorder hanging from the coat rack in his office, and sheepishly explains to the group how it was merely misplaced and not stolen; not surprisingly, they remain suspicious and uncomfortable. Finally, Bob attempts to record himself playing a harmonica into the tape recorder. Commercials deleted.
