NEWHART: LOOK HOMEWARD, STEPHANIE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedies about Dick and Joanna Loudon, who run a country inn in Vermont.
In this episode, Stephanie is annoyed by rude guests as Dick excitedly tells George that he has purchased a set of pretty wind chimes for Joanna's birthday. Joanna immediately guesses what it is, as she does every year. Stephanie's mother calls and summons her to her ex-husband Carl's second wedding. Stephanie reluctantly heads back to her rich parents' palatial home, bringing along an awed Michael. Stephanie, defensive of her choice to abandon a comfortable marriage and work as a maid, is taken aback when her parents admit that they were wrong to cut her off. Arthur and Marian then invite her to live with them again. Though she is pleased to be back in the lap of luxury, she is frustrated when her parents begin to control her life with fancy social engagements and demands.
Dick is foiled again when Joanna attempts to purchase the same quilt that he has just bought for her birthday. Stephanie quickly falls back into her old spoiled ways when her father bribes her with a car. Michael, while thoroughly enjoying the upper-crust life, notes that she has become "mean" since returning to her parents' home. Dick reaches for the stars in his third attempt to surprise Joanna. When Stephanie rudely snaps at the maid, Rose, she realizes that she has become just as snobby and thoughtless as the inn guests who mistreated her. Her parents assure her that she merely has "the Vanderkellen high standards," but Stephanie decides to leave once and for all. Michael is heartbroken to leave his swanky new life. Commercials deleted.
