GROWING PAINS: ANGER WITH LOVE {FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The fifth season premiere in this comedy series about the adventures of the Seaver family of Long Island, headed by psychiatrist dad Jason and reporter mom Maggie. In this episode, on the family cruise, Mike shocks everyone by announcing that he and babysitter Julie are in love and wish to marry as soon as possible. Maggie and Jason panic at their premature decision, and Carol explains to a clueless Ben that Mike is too young for such a step. Maggie and Jason invite the couple to dinner for a "calm" conversation and Jason produces a lengthy list of reasons why they should not wed, though Mike and Julie have surprisingly good answers for many of their arguments. One tense day later, Ed and Kate arrive from Boston, and Mike is upset to find that Maggie intends to fire his bride-to-be. Ed and Kate are pleased about the engagement, glad that Mike is finally settling down, and Mike threatens to elope with Julie when his parents begin to squabble anew.
Julie begins to have doubts about their impulsive decision, and Maggie tries to oust her parents for disagreeing with her, recalling that they once strongly objected to her own marriage to "hippie sleazeball" Jason. Ed challenges Mike's true feelings for Julie, but Mike firmly defends his "tramp" fiancée, and Ed, convinced, tells him to confront his parents once and for all. Jason tries to suggest that they wait a year rather than rushing into a ceremony, but Maggie remains determined to "nip this in the bud." However, she then realizes that she is, in fact, turning into her own mother, and changes her tune as she assures the young couple that she will not stand in the way of their true love.
