ACCIDENTAL FAMILY: THE RETURN OF MR. EX (TV)

Summary

One in this short-lived comedy series about widowed comedian Jerry Webster and his growing bond with his housemate, divorcée Sue Kramer. In this episode, Jerry tries to answer Tracy's questions about the daily routine of the adult male, and he is later surprised by a visit from Hank, Sue's wayward ex-husband. With the kids his on a camping trip, Jerry tries to persuade an angry Sue to talk to Hank, though she warns Jerry that Hank's charming demeanor hides his unreliable ways. Hank asks Jerry to relate the news that he is writing a novel, which he intends to dedicate to Sue and Tracy, though Sue dismisses it as yet another one of his half-baked pipe dreams. Sue reluctantly agrees to let Hank stay for dinner, and though she tries to banish him to a motel until Tracy's return, she is forced to allow him to remain at the house when he suddenly takes ill. Jerry tries to encourage Sue to "root for" Hank, though she cautions him not to be fooled by Hank's claims.

Jerry is impressed when Hank describes his novel-in-progress, a tragedy about a brave woman misunderstood by her oppressive society, though he is less than thrilled when Hank reveals his intentions to win Sue back, using the novel to convince her of his worthiness. Jerry heads to Vegas for a show, though some unexpectedly wise words from his chatty seatmate cause him to quickly return home, where he finds that Sue has begun to change her mind, believing that her ex may have truly turned over a new leaf. Hank happily assures Jerry that he and Sue are sure to be remarried soon, though when Jerry shows Hank's draft to Marty, Marty points out that it is simply a thinly veiled rip-off of Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina." Annoyed, Jerry confronts Hank about the lie, and he claims that he acted solely out of a desire to reunite with his family. When Jerry mentions that he put a note in the paper about Hank to boost his potential career, however, Hank reveals that he is in fact hiding from some shady characters to whom he owes money and prepares a hasty departure. Sue is exasperated to realize that "he did it again," though she is touched to realize that Jerry attempted to hide Hank's lies from her at first out of kindness, unaware that he may have had other objections in mind.
