LUCY SHOW, THE: LUCY BUYS A BOAT {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series starring Lucille Ball as Lucy Carmichael.

Lucy sees an advertisement in the newspaper for a sailboat and wants to buy it, hoping to spend her summer on the lake in it. Vivian doesn’t approve of the idea, but Lucy manages to talk her into it. The boat proves to be dilapidated and nowhere near seaworthy, necessitating a great deal of work in order to restore it. Lucy assumes the role of captain of the vessel and puts Vivian and the kids to work, much to their displeasure. Further problems arise when Lucy and Vivian are forced to bring the mast of the ship into the house to protect it from rain damage, and only manage to put it inside after a great deal of difficulty and several broken windows.

They dock the boat on the lake and Lucy and Vivian start loading it. Vivian is highly uncomfortable, constantly swallowing seasickness pills and wearing a life vest. The rocking of the boat proves to be rather intense, and their problems worsen when they realize that their rope has broken and they have become unmoored, drifting out onto the center of the lake. They did not pack the sails and thus have no way to get back to shore, forcing them to wait until morning when the lake patrol comes to pick them up. Vivian’s sickness worsens, and Lucy’s attempts to eat dinner are complicated by the constant rocking of the ship. Finally Vivian falls asleep in her chair, causing trouble for Lucy when the chair starts sliding around the ship. Lucy locks her in the cabin and sleeps in the kitchen, throwing out her back in the process. They awaken the next morning and panic when the boat suddenly starts springing leaks. They desperately try to contain the situation until the lake patrol stumbles upon them. Includes commercials.
