I LOVE LUCY: RICKY HAS LABOR PAINS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedies about the escapades of Lucy Ricardo, a zany redheaded housewife with show business aspirations, her Cuban-born bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo, and their best friends and neighbors Fred and Ethel Mertz. The increasing focus on Lucy and her upcoming child is slowly edging Ricky out. When her friends throw her a baby shower, Lucy forgets all about Ricky, leaving him to fend for himself. The next morning, Ricky is sick and Lucy calls in a doctor. The doctor posits that Ricky is experiencing symptoms not dissimilar to a pregnant woman due to his feelings of neglect. He tells Lucy and Ethel that curing Ricky requires that he be made the center of attention. Lucy and Ethel come up with the idea of throwing him a “daddy shower,” a party celebrating the father of the child attended by Ricky’s friends. Fred agrees to round up men for the “daddy shower,” but Lucy and Ethel are a bit skeptical when they hear him refer to it as a “stag party.” They decide to spy on the proceedings disguised as a newspaper reporter and photographer. The “shower” begins and Lucy and Ethel soon find themselves in over their heads. They try to leave but Ricky calls them back; he saw through their disguises the whole time. He forgives her for snooping. Late that night, Ricky gets back from having to fetch Lucy food in the middle of the night to satisfy her “cravings.” Lucy reveals that the idea for the “daddy shower” originated in the doctor’s diagnosis of his condition despite Ricky’s insistence otherwise. The episode ends as Ricky gets a “craving” similar to Lucy’s. Includes commercials.
