EQUAL JUSTICE: IN CONFIDENCE (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic legal series about the hard-working attorneys in a Pittsburgh district attorney's office. In this episode, Julie's prosecution of accused murderer Jack Landos hits a snag when the sole surviving witness, Jana Carlton, is too traumatized by memories of her husband's death to identify the criminal. The lawyers are frustrated by malfunctioning heat in the office as Peter tells Landos that he intends to argue that his arrest was unlawful. On the stand, Detective Perry describes the grim crime scene, and Peter makes a convincing case for mistaken identity and police brutality. Elsewhere, during their first date, Mike ends up telling Maggie all about Delia's tragic death. Landos soon coldly confesses to attacking Jana and shooting her husband, smugly reminding Peter that he is ethically bound to defend him no matter what.
Jesse and Gene debate enrolling their daughter in an expensive private school to avoid the rising gang violence at her current public school, though Gene suggests that they should tackle the problem head-on with the school board's help. Peter asks to be removed from Landos' case, feeling that he cannot defend such a remorseless sociopath, but Sam angrily reminds him that he cannot make such judgement calls as a public defender. Julie quickly asks for a continuance when the blood evidence appears to be contradictory, and she is shocked to learn from Jana that her husband was cremated, meaning that he cannot be re-tested to prove Landos' guilt.
Maggie tells Linda that Mike is clearly not ready for a new relationship, though Mike enjoyed the date and declares his intentions to see her again. Julie, sure that she is losing her case, is surprised when Peter suggests a plea deal, though Landos, confident that the police will not find the murder weapon where he stashed it several blocks from the crime scene, strenuously objects to the idea. Growing desperate, Julie begs Perry to find the gun and pleads with Jana to remember the killer's face, but to no avail. Linda awkwardly tells Mike that Maggie desires someone "more fun," and Jesse tells Gene that she wishes to find a job not just for Katie's private school, but so that she herself can feel "useful" again. Mike decides to show Maggie his whimsical side and surprises her with a rather literal performance of "Singin' in the Rain," much to her delight. Julie and Peter are equally upset when the charges against Landos are dropped because of the lack of conclusive evidence, and Peter angrily accosts his former client outside of court, furious that a killer is walking free. He later summons Perry to the alley where Landos hid the gun and produces the weapon, and the two have an angry brawl, blaming one another for their failure to put the killer behind bars. Commercials deleted.
