SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {MARY TYLER MOORE} {EDITED FOR
SYNDICATION} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. This version has been edited for syndication. Actress Mary Tyler Moore hosts this program, with musical guest Elvis Costello.

In the opening skit, Michael Caine presents at the Academy Awards, which shows highlights of the technical awards show, then cuts to the very large and complicated "best extras" presentation. During her opening monologue, Moore explains that family groups asked her to boycott the show because of the repeated use of a certain anatomical word in a previous episode, but that she decided to appear anyway despite being "old-fashioned."

Sketches include the following: the Sweeney Sisters meet up with their third sister Audrey, who has recently left her husband, in the lobby of a Holiday Inn, and the three of them perform a medley of classic hits about love; an installment of "The Dan Quayle Show" in which the vice-president laments his boring job and is assisted by his wife and bizarre staff, who offer him a selection of unfunny "topical" jokes; an installment of "Wayne's World" in which the boys and "excellent babe" Nancy invite Garth's nerdy dad and their surprisingly cool math teacher, Miss Simpson, into the basement for a chat; a commercial pleading for the renewed popularity of carbon paper; an ad for the "Lady Rhemington" shaver; and a scene involving a persuasive customs agent who easily convinces a number of airline passengers to confess the their illegal possessions and thanks them for their honesty before sending them to jail. Elvis Costello performs "Veronica" and "Let Him Dangle." Commercials deleted.
