MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD: MISTER ROGERS TALKS ABOUT COMPETITION {CRAYON FACTORY, DRAWING CONTEST} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of programs for young children, hosted by Fred Rogers, which uses puppets and music to teach patience and cooperation, while providing guidance to help children cope with feelings and frustrations.
In this episode, Mister Rogers demonstrates how to make a small seat out of three sticks, bolts, and a piece of leather, provided by Mr. McFeely. He draws with crayons before introducing a video from a crayon factory, which shows how wax is combined with pigment, poured into molds and wrapped in paper labels before being shipped out in boxes as complete crayons. He doodles a house, a tree, and a person while singing a song, and then introduces the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, where King Friday has announced a drawing contest. At Friday's request, Miss Paulificate telephones Harriet Elizabeth Cow and asks her to assist with the contest. Miss Paulificate temporarily takes over Harriet's class, teaching Daniel Striped Tiger, Ana Platypus and Prince Tuesday all about the telephone.
Harriet is skeptical about the drawing contest, feeling that it is hard to compare different people's talents, but Friday persuades her that he will make a fair judgment and then award a "surprise prize." Lady Elaine informs Handyman Negri that she is determined to win the contest, having grown up always losing to her sister; elsewhere, Mister Rogers tries his hand at drawing the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. He sings "You Are My Friend," assuring the viewer that they are uniquely special, and closes the program with "It's Such a Good Feeling."
