SALLY JESSY RAPHAËL: LIZA MINNELLI AND CAST OF "STEPPING OUT" (TV)

Summary

One in this talk show series hosted by Sally Jessy Raphaël. In this episode, Raphaël interviews actress Liza Minnelli and the cast of "Stepping Out" (1991). Raphaël first introduces Minnelli, and the conversation touches on such topics as: her recent weight loss, thanks to all the tap-dancing in the film; her memories of performing alongside her mother Judy Garland and how she was "always on her side"; her sense of having her close family and friends "with" her when performing onstage for the first time; the need to "rewrite" one's own life during difficult times; her memories of growing up with little money despite her parents' fame; her financial highs and lows as an adult; whether she would sing a duet with a recording of her mother's; her performance with the Pet Shop Boys of a cover of "Losing My Mind" from Stephen Sondheim's "Follies"; the close friendships forged on the set of "Stepping Out"; comments about her other famous friends including honorary uncle Frank Sinatra and the "perfect" Dudley Moore; and her excitement at meeting the "swell" Princess Diana at the U.K. premiere of "Stepping Out."

Minnelli then introduces her fellow cast members from the film: Shelley Winters, Andrea Martin, Bill Irwin, Sheila McCarthy, Jane Krakowski, Robyn Stevan and Carol Woods. The conversation touches on such topics as: Winters' memories of early Minnelli; funny tales from the set; Winters' description of her role as piano player; Martin's auditions for various other roles in the film; her recent filming of television pilot alongside Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher; how the cast bonded over the "common stress" of learning to tap dance; a funny story involving Steven and a pair of errant water balloons; Stevan's weight gain and change of hair style for the film; Woods' upcoming stage role in "The Crucible"; Krakowski's enjoyment of Friday-night celebrations at Minnelli's house during filming; Irwin's recent in experience in becoming an adoptive father; and McCarthy's role in "Paradise" (1991) alongside Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: whether Minnelli would star as Dorothy in a remake of her mother's famous film "The Wizard of Oz" (1939); her current marital status and plans for children; her role in "Cabaret" (1972) and how "Stepping Out" was a more "joyous" shoot; Irwin's role in "Popeye" (1980); whether Minnelli plans to return to Broadway; her first-ever performance at age seven; Winters' memories of filming "A Place in the Sun" (1951) alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift; the film's themes of "friendship and sharing"; and Minnelli's description of the worst day of her life.

Clips from "Stepping Out" are interspersed throughout the program, as well as scenes from "The Judy Garland Show" and "The Ed Sullivan Show" (1965) and the video for "Losing My Mind." Woods performs the song "Home," and Minnelli sings the title song from "Stepping Out."
