GOLDEN GIRLS, THE: SISTER OF THE BRIDE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about four older women -- two widows, and a divorcee and her mother -- who share a home in Miami and help each other to cope with growing older and being single again.

In this episode, Sophia haggles with various vendors for an upcoming awards banquet, at which Rose is confident that she will finally win the "Volunteer Vanguard" award, since her longtime competition, Agnes Bradshaw, has not-so-sadly passed away. Blanche happily announces that her brother Clayton is arriving for a visit, and though she is sure that he is over his "gay phase," she is flustered when he arrives with his "very special friend" Doug in tow. Rose, eager to show off her victory, invites Clayton and Doug along to the banquet, though Blanche panics about "what people will say." Clayton, overhearing her comments, informs her that he and Doug are used to facing prejudice and are unconcerned about others' judgments. They are, he tells her, engaged to be married.

At the banquet, Rose excitedly prepares her "impromptu" acceptance speech, and Blanche, still furious with her brother, arrives to support her friend. Rose is then outraged when Agnes wins the award posthumously, and she is forced to rework her speech as she accepts the honor on her nemesis' behalf. Dorothy quickly realizes that her mother "sold her" to every waiter, salesman and busboy in the room. When Blanche balks at introducing Doug to the other guests, Clayton sternly informs her that Doug is a part of his family whether or not she accepts it. Back at home, Sophia points out that everyone deserves the chance to celebrate their choice of a loved one with whom to spend their life. Blanche, finding that Doug sincerely loves her brother, finally decides that Clayton's happiness is paramount and agrees to support their union. At the same time, Rose finally gets her revenge on the late Agnes. Commercials deleted.
