ME AND THE BOYS: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this comedy series about the daily lives of widower Steve Tower and his three rambunctious sons. In this episode, the boys' grandmother, Mary, stops middle son William from enjoying a junk-food breakfast, though he tries to recruit little brother Andrew to help him outwit her. Steve arrives and lectures oldest son Artis about his studying habits, stressing the importance of striving for an A rather than settling for a B. Andrew then reveals that William is planning something illicit, though he is unsure what. Steve banters with Mary about his morning routine, reflecting on their early relationship when he married her late daughter. Artis requests money for a friend's birthday, but Steve turns him down, and then guesses that William is plotting to go see the violent and R-rated film "Grave Digger 4." When he asks William about it, the boy denies it, but Steve remains convinced. Later, he prepares for a double date with friends and makes a bet with Mary about how well he knows his sons and whether William will indeed attempt to sneak into the movie.

Steve goes with his date to see "Grave Digger 4," intending to catch William in the act, but instead finds himself scared of the film. He explains the situation to his date, Amelia, who praises his hands-on parenting. He then runs into not only William, but Artis, who admits that the helped him to sneak in. At home, Andrew plays video games with Mary, and Steve talks to William about making sound choices for his future and then sends him off to collect clothes from around the neighborhood for a church event as his punishment. Artis admits that William paid him and he needed the money, but Steve lectures him about true responsibility and his own role as their father. He then talks with Mary about how his own father would have reacted to a lie like William's, noting that his punishment would have been harsher. Later, William asks to see the more kid-friendly "Free Willy 2," though Steve has doubts about its quality. Includes commercials.
