OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES, THE XVII {1994 LILLEHAMMER OLYMPICS}: DAY 8 {PART 6 OF 8} (TV)

Summary

This program presents a portion of coverage of the 1994 XVII Olympic Winter Games from Lillehammer. Highlights of this portion include coverage of the following events and topics:

Anchor sports commentator Greg Gumbel presides over this portion.

Sports commentator Pat O'Brien narrates the opening segment that recaps the women's downhill combined race results. Katja Seizinger (Germany) tops standings with gold medal. Picabo Street (USA) slides into second by just 0.06 seconds behind first place and wins the silver. Isolde Kostner (Italy) hangs onto the bronze medal 0.92 seconds behind first place.

Gumbel interviews skier Picabo Street (USA) in studio after the women's downhill skiing medal ceremony. Street is seen in studio displaying her first-ever Olympic medal draped around her neck. Gumbel and Street analyze her medal winning run down the alpine course.

Sports commentators Verne Lundquist and Scott Hamilton provide their expert insight and color commentary to the men's figure skating long program event. Lundquist and Hamilton observe briefly about seeing how the proverbial torch seems to be in the process of being passed from veteran skaters to the 'youngsters.' Brief introspective commentaries are given by veteran skaters Brian Boitano (USA) and Kurt Browning (Canada). Oksana Baiul (Ukraine) is observed watching Viktor Petrenko (Russia) skate a flawless performance.

Correspondent Ed Bradley brings a remarkable human interest story to life: In the town of Odessa, of what was the former USSR, two American skaters, Katie Wood and Bob Young, had been competing in Paris competition. While in a lifted position eight feet from the ice, Wood (USA) fell when her partner caught a toe on his skate. Unconscious, Wood was taken to a run-down hospital at which she was assisted by skater Viktor Petrenko (Russia) and his coach, who recognized Wood as a fellow athlete. Wood recovered from her injuries with only minimal hearing loss, and Petrenko (Russia) went on to be a gold medal champion at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville.

Gumbel recaps men's ice hockey: Sweden beats USA score 6-4, but USA is still in medal round contention if they beat Italy. Italy is victorious over France by 7-3.

Gumbel recaps the disappointing practice session of Tonya Harding (USA) and alludes to the upcoming ice dancing, ski jumping and women's speed skating 500-meter event.

Olympic promo recapping women's combined alpine skiing and ski jumping to the song "Leap of Faith," by Bruce Springsteen.

Sports commentators Dick Stockton and Eric Heiden bring the final medal round in women's speed-skating 500-meter event. Bonnie Blair (USA) is the current world, Olympic and USA record holder in this event. Blair wins the heat with a new personal best of 39.25. Xue Ruihouf (China) comes in a very close second.

For the medals, Blair (USA) triumphs with her fourth gold at these Games. Susan Auch (Canada) receives the silver and Franziska Schenk (Germany) wins the bronze.

Blair jumps into stands with her family upon realizing she will win the gold medal. Sports commentator Mike Barcan interviews Blair and her mother Eleanor at ice level.

Gumbel leads the viewers into some insight of Blair and her rise in her hometown of Champaign, Illinois. Blair became to be sponsored by her local police department at age seventeen upon chance meeting in a coffee shop. She is continuously in the role of Goodwill Ambassador to her town.

Gumbel closes the broadcast with a story about speed-skater Kristen Talbot (USA). Talbot rallied to be able to be a part of this Olympic team as she had donated bone marrow to her ill brother. She placed twentieth in the 500-meter race.

Notable commercial includes Jason Alexander for Rold Gold.
