X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, PT. 2 {EPISODE 12} (TV)

Summary

Continued from B:41034. One in this animated series about the Marvel comics characters known as the X-Men: mutants—advanced humans with special powers—that attempt to fight evil and injustice from their New York-based “school for the gifted.” In this two-part episode, the second part opens with Bishop attacking Gambit, declaring him a “traitor” and an assassin. Rogue deflects his shot and they demand an explanation. Bishop says that in his time, all mutants were blamed for Gambit’s actions, and strict new laws were put into place to control mutants, which eventually led to the internment camps and breakdown of world order and peace. He tells them he can change everything by preventing a specific assassination, which will allegedly be committed by Gambit, but says that he is not even sure of the target’s identity, knowing only that it takes place in Washington, D.C. Professor Xavier theorizes that it could be him, which unnerves the others. Gambit protests that Bishop is a stranger and not to be trusted, but Wolverine counters that they know very little of Gambit’s personal history as well. Frustrated, Gambit declares his intentions to travel to Washington to prevent this assassination, but he is stopped and forced to stay behind with Wolverine and Bishop while the others go to D.C. However, he manages to escape and heads for the capital.

In Washington, Blob, Pyro and Avalanche are revealed to be hatching a plan for the very same assassination as a court case about mutant rights is carried out. Xavier is questioned about his school and his “agenda,” but the proceedings are interrupted by violence. Jean and Cyclops battle Pyro and the others, and Xavier mentally summons the other X-Men. They manage to defeat the villains and save some bystanders, but Bishop heads straight for Congress, believing that the murder will still happen. In Senator Robert Kelly’s office, his assistant transforms into Gambit and attempts to kill him—but it is, of course, the shapeshifter Mystique. The real Gambit enters and they fight. Bishop arrives shortly and plans to kill both Gambits just to be safe, but Rogue appears and destroys his transceiver, sending him back to 2055. Rogue intends to turn Mystique in, but cannot bring herself to do so, as Mystique was once her foster mother, and she helps her escape. Once they are safe, Mystique reveals that Apocalypse ordered her and the others to kill Kelly in order to assure the mutants’ safety in the future, and though Rogue tells her that he intends to enslave them all, she is still unsure.

Back in 2055, Bishop realizes that nothing has changed even though he saved Kelly, and Forge grimly concludes that something else must have happened in the past that caused their current state. In the past, Xavier and the others go to see Kelly, but find that he has been kidnapped. Cyclops thinks it was the work of the mutants that they just fought, but Xavier has another theory, and proves it by showing that his watch has been magnetized, suggesting that Magneto is involved. Commercials deleted.
