TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {MADELINE KAHN, DON RICKLES, MICHAEL FRANKS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actress Madeline Kahn, comedian Don Rickles and musician Michael Franks. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the recent earthquake in Los Angeles and its worrisome aftershocks; Columbus Day; Vice-President Bush's announcement of his candidacy for president in 1988 and accusations that he is "immature"; the latest antics of Yerosha, a Soviet chimp in outer space; and updates on the baseball playoffs, which may again, confusingly, pre-empt the show to another date.
Carson then chats with co-host Ed McMahon about events in Washington D.C. and introduces an installment of "As the White House Turns," featuring notable politicians like Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Strom Thurmond and Joe Biden in melodramatic scenarios.
The first guest, Kahn, takes the stage and discusses her vague memories of her "first love"; working with George C. Scott, known for his dramatic talents and intense on-set persona, on their lighthearted sitcom "Mr. President"; her role as the president's sister-in-law and potential mistress; whether she herself would make a good politician; her permanent residence in New York and rental of an overlarge L.A. mansion; and her taste in men and whether she ever intends to marry.
Next, Rickles joins Kahn and Carson and comments on his own marriage at age thirty-eight; McMahon's impressive speedboat; his sense that the famously shy Carson has become more sociable since marrying fourth wife Alexis Maas; Carson's 1980 trip to the White House; and Rickles' silly television commercials for Anso V Worry-Free carpeting.
Finally, Franks performs "Island Life" from his new album "The Camera Never Lies." Includes commercials and promos.
