TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {TOM SELLECK, CAROL KANE, EDDIE DANIELS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. His guests for this program are actor Tom Selleck, actress Carol Kane, and clarinetist Eddie Daniels.
In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: long lines for eager "Tonight Show" audience members; the apparent death of Selleck's title character on "Magnum, P.I." at the end of the seventh season in April; ideas for tourist activities in the San Fernando Valley; actor Sean Penn's stay in a "very posh prison" after assaulting a photographer; President Ronald Reagan's proposal of a cease-fire in Nicaragua; Iran's questionable nautical capabilities; the 30th anniversary of "American Bandstand"; the 97th anniversary of the country's first (somewhat botched) execution by electric chair, that of convicted wife-killer William Kemmler; the environmental hazards of McDonald's Styrofoam containers; actress Valerie Harper's salary negotiations for her series "Valerie," later "The Hogan Family" (which eventually led to her character being killed off); and the ongoing problem of the Mobro 4000, the Long Island garbage barge that has yet to find a home. Next, Carson and announcer Ed McMahon examine a variety of odd novelty items, including a "Reagan Phone," a "dismem-bear" stuffed toy for working out stress and anger, a dog life jacket, and an "anatomically correct" Carson doll, among others.
The first guest, Selleck, emerges in casual shorts and explains how he misplaced his more formal pants; why he chose to extend his seven-year "Magnum" contract for one more season, thus requiring a clever explanation for his character's apparent decision to accept death in the season seven finale; his reaction to the suggestion that violence in TV programs like "Magnum" have contributed to the rash of freeway shootings in southern California; a 2,000-person party on the set of "Magnum" attended by the show's many guest actors, including Frank Sinatra, who appeared in a February 1987 episode; what role Carson might like to play in an episode; how the relatively minimal press presence in Hawaii allows Selleck to show his "dark side"; and the pros and cons of his famous mustache, including a disturbing statistic about body mites.
Next, Kane joins the others and discusses her own recent clothing mishap; her new film "Sticky Fingers" (1988); why she has never chosen to marry; and her "infamous" dog George, who is also pals with actor John Malkovich. Lastly, Daniels performs a number from his new album "To Bird With Love." Includes commercials.
