TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {WHOOPI GOLDBERG, BOB SAGET, WANG CHUNG} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. His guests for this program are actress Whoopi Goldberg, comedian Bob Saget and musical group Wang Chung.
In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: the recently-appointed Chief of Staff Howard Baker; the Tower Commission Report and the $20 million in Iran arms profit that has seemingly gone missing; Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North's questionable actions within the scandal, possibly aided by his secretary Fawn Hall; a surprising personal secret about Secretary of State George P. Shultz; and the circus' recent arrival in town.
Doc Severinsen notes that his jazz-fusion band is soon to play a concert. Carson introduces an installment of "As the White House Turns," in which he describes the melodramatic antics of President Ronald Reagan and his many associates with the help of funny photos.
The first guest, Goldberg, joins Carson onstage and discusses the following: fashion critic Richard Blackwell's notorious "worst-dressed" list; her role as a "Clint Eastwood in drag" cop character in the upcoming film "Fatal Beauty" (1987); the story behind her unusual stage name; her inexpensive Las Vegas wedding to cinematographer David Claessen, who was largely unaware of her celebrity status, after a very short courtship; the fickle nature of success and failure in Hollywood; and her confusion at her daughter's modern taste in music, similar to her own mother's views during her adolescence. A clip is then shown from her latest film, "Burglar" (1987).
Wang Chung performs "Let's Go!" from their new album "Mosaic," followed by "Everybody Have Fun Tonight." Saget then sits down with Carson and discusses the following: his busy schedule and new gig on "The Morning Program" on CBS; an unusual dream of his involving Carson and several other comedy stars; his twelve-day-old daughter Aubrey and the process of choosing her name; the challenges of caring for a newborn; his "weird family" and useful advice from his parents; and plans for life beyond showbiz. Includes commercials and promos.
