TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {CARRIE FISHER, GARRY SHANDLING, THE DAVID GRISMAN QUARTET} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actress Carrie Fisher, comedian Garry Shandling and musical group The Dave Grisman Quartet. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the perks of "nice, friendly" Burbank; the escalating price for the NBC studio tour; a fire on the famous Rodeo Drive; recent layoffs at sister/rival network CBS; an update on the "Pine Tar Incident," a dispute between Kansas City Royals player George Brett and famously hotheaded New York Yankees player Billy Martin; and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture John Block's questionable claim that American families can live on $58 per week.

The first guest, Fisher, sits down with Carson and comments on some of her tongue-twisting dialogue on the "Star Wars" films; growing up with famous parents Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher and childhood belief that "everyone's parents were movie stars"; her friendships with other stars' kids; bad memories of making "Under the Rainbow" (1981); the use of special effects in the "Star Wars" franchise and the challenge of reacting to non-existent characters and objects; and whether she feels that she will now be typecast because of her iconic role as Princess Leia. A clip is then shown from "Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi" (1983).

Carson then introduces a "closer look" at the October 28, 1980 Presidential debate between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, for which Reagan has recently been accused of secretly examining Carter's briefing papers ahead of time. In the split-screen "exclusive clip," in which Carson portrays both candidates, Reagan manages to accurately predict all of Carter's talking points, suggesting that he did indeed cheat.

Next, Shandling takes the stage and performs a stand-up routine in which he touches upon the following topics: how he writes his own original material; decorating his own house; his dad's "gross" habits; an unsuccessful evening out with a former Miss Georgia; and sexual tension and unclear "signals" at the end of dates. Shandling then briefly sits down with Carson and chats about his dislike of social situations and wish that more women would romantically approach men; his mother's optimistic matchmaking habits; and his hopes to double-date with the popular Carson.

Finally, The Dave Grisman Quartet plays a number from their new album, "Dawg Jazz/Dawg Grass" (1983). Includes commercials and promos.
