TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {CHARLES NELSON REILLY, GARRY SHANDLING, AUDRIE J. NEENAN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actor/director Charles Nelson Reilly, comedian Garry Shandling and actress Audrie J. Neenan. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: his unusual tie; the "gloomy" L.A. weather; National Secretaries' Week; the recent discovery of Adolf Hitler's diaries; President Reagan's plans to aid El Salvador; and automated gas stations in southern California.
Carson briefly chats with co-host Ed McMahon about some amusing personal ads found in the newspaper, after which Reilly sits down with Carson and discusses his new tuxedo; the "sections" of his life and his intermittent problems with asthma; his recent week-long hospital stay; his power speedboat and personal "nautical gift"; and a funny incident in which he had to be rescued by the Coast Guard after the boat stalled.
Next, in a "Customer Supporter" segment, consumer advocate David Howitzer, a parody of David Horowitz portrayed by Carson with the help of The Mighty Carson Art Players, offers some "useful" tips for smart shopping, cautioning viewers against falling for clever "bait-and-switches." Shandling then takes the stage and performs a stand-up routine in which he touches upon the following topics: his new ant-infested house; the woes of turning thirty – three years ago; childhood memories of "digging for China"; his dad's unusual yard-work habits; phone conversations with his parents in Tuscon; his recent break-up after being caught by his girlfriend in a preposterous lie; and the perils of losing one's looks to age.
Finally, Neenan joins Carson onstage and discusses her latest hairstyle; her childhood as one of six children working at their parents' hamburger stand; her family members' varying reactions to the Three Mile Island incident of 1979; her early career at the National Security Council and her frequent lateness and absence due to acting gigs; and her upcoming film "Sudden Impact" (1983) alongside Clint Eastwood. Includes commercials and promos.
